Mary Luhrs
Mary Cathryn Travis (Luhrs) was born February 4, 1928, in Ord, Nebraska. Mary graduated from Ord High School in 1946 then attended the University of Nebraska – Lincoln graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1950. On August 6, 1950, she married her college sweetheart, Gordon Otto Luhrs, in Ord, Neb. They moved to the Luhrs farm near Enders, Neb., where they lived for thirty-five years. In 1986, Mary and Gordon moved to Gordon's childhood home in Imperial.
Mary was a supporter and leader of the Chase County 4-H program for many years. Mary served on various committees in numerous organizations including the First United Methodist Church where she sang in the Choir and acted as the Church Historian for many years. Mary loved to play bridge, garden, sew and quilt along with spending time with grandchildren and cooking huge meals during wheat harvest. She also loved traveling around the country researching genealogy and finding new fabric shops.
Mary passed away Tuesday morning, May 10, 2022, at the Imperial Manor. She was 94 years of age.
Mary is preceded in death her husband Gordon, by her parents, Horace, and Martha Travis. Mary is survived by her sons, Art and wife Mary, of Wauneta, Bob and wife, Tracy, of Carmel, IN, John and wife Deb of Lawrence, KS and Tom and wife, Lynn, of Imperial; grandchildren, Rob, Victoria, Lauren, Kayla, Nic, Melyssa, Kyleen, Jenna, Travis, Molly and Spencer Luhrs, Gabrielle, Mitchell, Cooper and Blake Fetters, and four great grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mary will be held graveside, Mount Hope Cemetery, Tuesday May 17th, 11:00 A.M. with Rev. Melody Newman officiating.
Memorials, in Mary’s Memory, have been established to the Chase County Hospital Foundation, the Imperial Community Foundation and the First United Methodist Church of Imperial.
