Betty Jean Deyle

Betty Jean Deyle was born December 11, 1926 at the Chase County Hospital in Imperial, Nebraska to Elmer and Lottie (Fulk) Nelson and departed this life on August 11, 2019 at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman, Nebraska. She was 92 years of age.

She grew up on a farm in northern Dundy County and attended country grade school at District 11. She graduated from Benkelman High School in 1944, receiving a scholarship to Chillicothe Business College. Betty was then employed as a secretary to the Dundy County Agent and as a book keeper for the Beatty Chevrolet garage.

On October 19, 1947 she was united in marriage to Edwin Deyle at the Benkelman Zion Lutheran Church. They were blessed with three children: Gary Wayne, Cathy Jean and Rita Ann. After the death of Edwin’s father in 1952 they moved to the family farm in the northeast corner of Cheyenne County in Kansas.

Betty was a helpmate in caring for the cattle and hogs. She was an excellent cook and seamstress and a leader of various projects for 4-H club members. After Edwin’s death in June of 1981 she moved to Benkelman. Betty became involved with volunteer work at the library, the Senior Center and the museum. Much time was devoted to Zion Lutheran Church where she was a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir, was treasurer for 13 years and was involved in the quilting project for Lutheran World Relief. Betty also enjoyed traveling on many bus tours.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her great-granddaughter, Heavenly Rain Deyle, sister, Janice and husband, Wilbur Enfield, sister-in-law, Marie Wood, and brothers-in-law, Walter, Theodore and Rudolph Deyle.

Survivors include:
Son, Gary Deyle and wife, Mary of Benkelman; daughter, Cathy Harrison and husband, Don of Colby, Kansas; daughter, Rita Jones and husband, Bobby of Benkelman; five grandsons: Chad (Melissa) Deyle of Wray, Colorado; Matthew (Tara) Deyle of Alma, Nebraska; Luke (Dana) Deyle of Lincoln, Nebraska; James J. (Heidi) Deyle of Fremont, Nebraska; Joshua (Nikki) Jones of McCook, Nebraska; three granddaughters: Nikki (Andy) Bowen of Manhattan, Kansas; Lindsey Harrison of Colby, Kansas; Beth (Matt) Grummert of Lincoln, Nebraska; fifteen precious great-grandchildren; brother, Bernard Nelson and wife, Sandra of Benkelman, Nebraska; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M. (MT); Wednesday morning, August 14, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church in Benkelman with Pastor Doug Hjelmstad officiating. Interment will follow services in the Benkelman Cemetery.

Visitation will be Tuesday afternoon, August 13, 2019 from 2:00-6:00 P.M. (MT) at Zion Lutheran Church in Benkelman. The family will be present to greet the public from 4:00-6:00 P.M.

A memorial has been established to the Zion Lutheran Church of Benkelman.
