Cliff Shackelford
Clifford L. Shackelford was born June 5, 1921, in the Imperial, Nebraska, area, and he lived his early years in the Lamar community of Chase County, Nebraska. He passed away December 2, 2014, at the age of 93.
Cliff was the son of Emmet and Mae Frederick Shackelford. He was united in marriage to Vera Marie Bischoff on September 5, 1942, in Wauneta, Nebraska. To this union was born one son, Lon Shackelford.
Cliff served in the U.S. Army Air Forces Air Transport Command during World War II. He returned home in 1945, and he became a partner in the Plains Oil Company, which had been owned by his brother, Vilas. For many years Cliff was involved in the operation and management of Plains Oil Company, during which time he enjoyed meeting and working with customers of the local service stations in Wauneta and Imperial, the many farmers and ranchers whom he provided with fuel and oil, and the petroleum marketers throughout Southwest Nebraska to whom he also provided fuel and oil through the Plains transport services. Cliff and Vera purchased the Plains Oil business in 1966, and continued to expand its operations with service stations in the Nebraska communities of Grand Island, Sidney, and Alliance, among others, and in the Kansas communities of Colby and Goodland. Cliff and Vera sold the business in 1977, and Cliff then loved the yearly winter trips to Apache Junction, Arizona, where he and Vera eventually bought a second home.
Following Vera’s death on March 4, 1994, Cliff continued to spend the summer months in Wauneta and the winter months in his beloved Arizona. He was very fortunate to have met another great love in his life, and on May 1, 1998, he and Margie Kitt were married in Austin, Texas. Cliff and Margie enjoyed many years of retirement in Wauneta during the warmer months and in Apache Junction, Arizona, during the winter months.
Survivors include Cliff’s wife, Margie; son and daughter-in-law, Lon and Joanne and their daughter, Kristen; and stepchildren Jerolyn Spady, Karrol Kitt and John Kitt; Jerolyn’s husband, Ken and their children Chad, Tara and Kari; Karrol’s son, Loren Ramshur III; and John’s wife Cyndai and their children Nikole, John Jacob and Jordan; as well as brother-in-law Dale Bischoff and many nephews, nieces and great-grandchildren.
Preceding Cliff in death were his parents, Emmet and Mae Shackelford; wife, Vera; and brothers, Vilas, Virgil, Victor, Harold, Eugene, Ralph, Doyle, Darryl, and Gilbert.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, December 6, 2014, 10:30 A.M. (MT), at the United Methodist Church in Wauneta, Nebraska, with Pastor Bonnie McCord officiating. Interment followed at Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, Nebraska.
Visitation was held Friday, December 5, 2014, 2:00-6:00 p.m., at the funeral home in Wauneta, Nebraska.
A memorial has been established in Cliff’s memory to the McCook Community Hospice and the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department.
