DONA HAYES
Dona Sue Hayes was born November 1, 1956 at Chase County Community Hospital to Glen Joseph Hayes and Billie Louiese (Brewer) Hayes. She died the morning of July 30, 2015 at her home with family beside her, after batting a lengthy illness.
She attended school in the Imperial school systems and graduated from Chase County High School in 1975. She worked as a fry cook in a number of cafés in Imperial and cooked at Chase County Community Hospital prior to attending college. She graduated in 1982 with an Associates Degree in Health Science with an emphasis in Emergency Medicine from Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. She returned to the community of Imperial, where she obtained her paramedic certification through McCook Community College. The day she moved back to Imperial she was handed a pager and key and was told to show up at the ambulance if the pager goes off and remained on the service for 30 years until her health would no longer allow her to do so. She worked at Chase County Community Hospital in housekeeping, as a nurse’s aide, and as an X-ray assistant before going back to college. In 1992 she graduated from the University of Nebraska Medical Center School of Nursing in Kearney with her Bachelors of Science in Nursing. She came back to Imperial and worked at Chase County Community Hospital as an RN at night as well as ER supervisor and when the trauma system started in NE she also became the Trauma nurse coordinator. While working at the hospital full time she also worked part time between the Imperial Manor and Heritage of Wauneta. Even during Dona’s declining health she continued to work at the Imperial Manor and went on ambulance transfers.
Dona loved being with family and friends. The joys in Dona’s life were having her nephews, nieces, great nephews, and great nieces. Family gatherings and getting together with friends were her favorite activities. Dona was blessed with many wonderful friends and family that volunteered their time to take her to dialysis. She thoroughly enjoyed the time she spent with them.
She was preceded in death by her grand parents Charles and Anna Hayes and John and Opal Brewer, parents Billie and Glen Hayes, a sister Ruth Ann, and brothers Joseph Glen and Danny Ray, niece Angie Louise Villarreal, and dear cousin Gregory William Hayes.
She is survived by sister Tammy and husband Ben Villarreal, sister Billie Hayes, brother Jim E. Hayes and wife Deb, nephews Armando Villarreal and wife Lora, Glen Villarreal and wife Crystal of Waverly Nebraska, Tim Wilson of Syracuse Nebraska, Tyler Neben and wife Kristina of Culbertson Nebraska, niece Sabrina Hayes, Angie Neben and her significant other Shane Ryan of Mason City, Nebraska, great nephews Travis, Darin, Jaret, and Court Neben, Jaxsen and Benjamin Villarreal, great nieces Kristina and Alex Pflum, Mariska and Braelyn Villarreal, and close cousins Tina Hayes, John Stegmaier and wife Jaime and family, Candace and husband Lance Coon and family, and Stephen Hayes, and close family friends Mason Holmes, Tyler Redden and wife Tanya, and Deavon Blake and families.
Dona’s wishes were to be cremated and have her family scatter her ashes in a private ceremony. A memorial service was held Tuesday morning, August 4th, 2015 9:30 A.M. at the United Methodist Church of Imperial with Kent Swink officiating.
A memorial has been established in Dona’s memory to Imperial EMS for a 12 lead cardiac monitor. Dona’s last call to duty was paged out on Tuesday Morning, August 4, 2015 at 10:15 am.
