Duane Frank Gladue
Duane Frank Gladue was born December 9, 1922 to Alphonse and Mary Gladue in Walhalla North Dakota. Duane grew up on a farm outside of Walhalla. He was the eldest of eight children; three brothers and four sisters. After high school he joined the Navy, completing the Naval Training School (Signal) at Farragut Idaho in June 1944. Duane served in the Pacific during WWII.
Shortly after leaving the service Duane met his loving wife and life partner, Marjorie Makinster of Lamar Nebr. Duane and Margie were married May 15, 1948 and farmed for many years with Margie's parents Nellie and Bill Makinster. After Bill retired Duane continued to farm wheat and corn in and around Lamar and Venango. Duane was always early to rise to get the job done. He valued hard work and a straight row. Duane and Margie lived in Lamar in the home they bought in 1953 until they moved into the Imperial Heights in 2004. Duane passed away early Saturday Morning, March 27, 2010 at the Imperial Manor. He was 87 years of age.
Besides farming; Duane enjoyed spending time with Margie, his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He was a referee for elementary school basketball as well as taking time to umpire youth baseball in the rural Lamar area even though it was summer and the days were long. Duane and Margie enjoyed traveling to see their children and grandchildren, going to Tucson for spring training and the Denver Broncos. He also enjoyed a good game of cards with family.
Duane was a member of the Chase County ASC, serving as vice-president in 1963 and 1964. He was a life-time member of the American Legion, Venango branch. He and Margie were members of Saint Patrick's Catholic Church in Imperial since their marriage in 1948.
Duane was preceded in death by his loving wife Marjorie in 2007. Also preceding him in death were his parents Alphonse and Mary Gladue, brothers Alva and Robert Gladue, sister in-law Alice Gladue, brother in-law Raymond Danielson, father and mother in-law Bill and Nellie Makinster, sister and brother in-law Eula and Charles Briggs, and brother and sister in-law Robert and Norma Makinster Norma,
Duane will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by his children and their families; daughter Shirleen Fowler and husband Wayne of Fresno CA, granddaughter Cora Silva her husband Andy and their children Josie and Rachel of Clovis CA, son Richard Gladue of Fairfax VA, and grandson Aaron Gladue and wife Andrea and their children Griffin and Jillian of Richmond Va. Also surviving are brother George Gladue and wife Lucille of Seabring Florida, sisters Stella Taylor of Minnesota, Jean Grubb and husband Dale of Wenatchee Washington, Ramona Danielson of Grandforks, ND, Marlene Burchard and husband Jim of Grandforks and sister in law Shirley Tallman and husband Sid of Pawnee City NE and numerous nieces and nephews.
Duane will be lovingly remembered for his hard work, dedication to his family, his sincerity, sense of humor and good will. He often helped out strangers passing through Lamar who found temporary or long term work in the fields with Duane. His children and family are grateful for his guidance and love and for being part of his life. He and Marjorie will be deeply missed and remembered for their love. Their role model of love and life will be reflected in our families forever. Thanks mom and dad we can never replace your love.
Visitation will be held Tuesday afternoon, March 30th, 2010, 2:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. (MDT) at the funeral home in Imperial, NE.
A Rosary will be recited Tuesday evening, March 30th, 2010, 7:00 P.M. (MDT) at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Imperial, NE.
Mass of the Christian Burial will be held Wednesday morning, March 31, 2010, 10:00 A.M. (MDT) at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Imperial, NE., with Father Bernard Lorenz celebrating. Interment will follow at Green Lawn Cemetery, Lamar, NE
A memorial has been established in Duane’s memory
