George Rudolph Korkisch joined his Savior on January 23, 2016. He was a loving, devoted husband, brother, uncle and godfather. George was born on June 8, 1920 in Ilion, New York. A member of the United States Army's 6th infantry division during World War II, Corporal Korkisch earned a Purple Heart fighting alongside his unit in the Asian Pacific. After an honorable discharge from the United States Army, Mr. Korkisch married Bonnie Edwards of Benkelman, NE, in 1949. They moved to Huntsville, Alabama, in 1958 where he worked for the United States Army until his retirement in 1974.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Mrs. Bonnie Edwards Korkisch, his parents, Katharina and Frank Korkisch, and his brothers, Frank and John Korkisch.
He is survived by his brother-in-law, Eugene Edwards, six nieces, Sr. Jean Barbara Korkisch, Paula Volentine (Jay), Lois Korkisch, Pam Edwards, Patty O'Doherty (David), Mary Laughlin (Sandy), thirteen great-nieces and nephews; and godson, Andrew Joseph Battle, husband of Lauren Battle, and their son, Mr. Korkisch's great-godson, George Thomas Battle of Huntsville.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, January 30th at Trinity United Methodist Church in Huntsville.
Graveside services will be 11:00 A.M. (MT), Saturday, May 14, 2016 at Benkelman Cemetery in Benkelman, Nebraska with Pastors Richard and Joy Savage officiating and full Military Honors.
No visitation; George was cremated.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Huntsville Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
