Gracie Scarrow
Ethel Gracie McMillan Scarrow was born March 2, 1915, in Allen, Oklahoma. Gracie passed away on May 6, 2014, at the age of 99, while residing at the Lincoln County Memorial Nursing Home in Hugo, Colorado.
Gracie spent her childhood living in Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas with her mother, father and 10 siblings. She met and married Wilber Emerson Scarrow on May 19, 1936, at Berryville, Arkansas. To this union 7 children were born. The early years of raising her family was spent living between Dundy County, Nebraska and Carrole County, Arkansas. In 1954 they bought a home and resided in Max, Nebraska, until Wilber’s death in 1976. Gracie then lived in Dundy County, Nebraska, until moving to Flagler, Colorado, in 2000 to be near family. She was a member of the Hill Baptist Church of Berryville, Arkansas and the First Baptist Church of Benkelman, Nebraska.
Gracie was a loving and caring person who was a friend to all who met her. It was often said of her, the longer you know her the more beautiful she became. Her children remember her as a lover of the outdoors, and the long walks through the woods and country lanes she would take them on. During her life, she has been Sunday school teacher, bible school teacher, leader of cub scouts and member and President of the resident advisory board while residing at the nursing home. Gracie was very saving and even sewed quilts together until her death, out of every scrap of material she could find. She also did a lot of tatting and made dolls that she gave to the people she met while in the nursing home.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wilber; one son Jay Dee; one daughter Ethel; one granddaughter Doris Faye Scarrow; two grandsons Mike and Scott Carter; and one son-in-law Melvin Carter. She was the last survivor of all her siblings, 3 sisters, and 7 brothers.
Survivors include: Daughter: Edith Carter of Flagler, CO. Son: Lloyd Scarrow and wife Charlotte of Midland, TX. Daughter: Esther Burket and husband Ron of Ft. Pierre, SD. Son: Floyd Scarrow and wife Irene, of Suffolk, VA. Daughter: Lela Elaine Petersen and husband Mike of Flagler, CO. 11 Grandsons and 8 Granddaughters. Numerous Great-Grandchildren. Sister-in-Law: Nancy McMillan of Berryville, AR. Numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Saturday morning, May 10th, 2014, 10:30 A.M. (MT) at the Benkelman Community Building, Benkelman, Nebraska, with Pastor Sheila Taylor officiating. Interment will follow at the Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, Nebraska.
Visitation will be held Saturday morning, May 10, 2014, before services at the Benkelman Community Building.
A memorial has been established to Lincoln Community Care Center (Activities Department), Hugo Colorado.
