Henrietta Anna Marie (Brandt) Hink was born November 30, 1916, in the family home near the Bussel Precinct in rural Chase County, Nebraska, to Hans and Johanna (Hesemeyer) Brandt.
Henrietta grew up and attended grade school in Chase County. One of her greatest memories was that of the depression. She reminisced about the sheets that had to be wet and hung on windows and doors to keep the dust from choking them. She also told stories about the tornado that threw things at them in their basement. It also wreaked havoc to their home and barn. Henrietta did not attend high school because she had to start working at an early age. Her first job was caring for baby Debo Malcolm.
Henrietta married Lyle John Mendenhall on October 5, 1936, and the couple settled in Imperial, Nebraska. She was one of the truck drivers for their six semis. Henrietta was always proud when the drivers told her she could back those semis up better than any man. She spent many nights under the stars on top of her semi-load. After Lyle died and years went by, she decided to go back to school and attended Charles Denver Beauty School in Denver, Colorado, graduating in 1950. At that time, Henrietta moved back to Imperial and opened Henrietta’s Beauty Shop. When daughter Elaine was in school, Henrietta spent many nights, after working in her shop or at the café, staying up until very late asking Elaine questions to help with tests the next day. She worked at many jobs in order to send her daughter to school and give her advantages that would not be otherwise possible. Henrietta was a very hard worker all of her life. She drove trucks, was a waitress, babysitter and homemaker.
On August 17, 1958, Henrietta married Donald Hink in Hot Springs, South Dakota. After they were married, they were together constantly. They both loved to fish and hunt. They hunted deer in the mountains, prairie chickens in the Chadron area, fished in Nebraska, Colorado, South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana. Henrietta enjoyed life. She enjoyed working at any and everything. She was constantly busy, but never too busy for her daughter and her beloved grandchildren.
Henrietta passed away Wednesday morning, March 9, 2011, at the Imperial Manor Nursing Home, Imperial. She was 94 years of age.
Henrietta was preceded in death by her parents Johanna and Hans Brandt; husbands Lyle Mendenhall and Donald Hink; infant brother; brothers Albert, Fred, Reinhardt, John and Rudolph Brandt; son-in-law Leo Hink; and brother-in-law Ernest Hink.
Survivors Include: Daughter: Elaine Hink, of Imperial, NE 3 Grandchildren: Lisa Fuehrer of North Glenn, CO Davon Da Moude and husband Russ of Imperial, NE Sheri Hink and partner Brad Wagner of Lincoln, NE 6 Great-grandchildren: Rebecca Fuehrer of Plattsmouth, NE Trevor Fuehrer of Imperial, NE Krista Fuehrer of North Glenn, CO Makayla Da Moude of Imperial, NE Joel Da Moude of Imperial, NE Ty Wagner of Lincoln, NE Sisters-in-law: Lela Brandt of Imperial, NE Della Ruth Hink of Thornton, CO Agatha Brandt of Wichita Falls, TX Elsie Fern Stout of Indiana 20 Nieces and Nephews
Funeral Services for Henrietta Hink will be held Monday afternoon, March 14, 2011, 2:00 P.M. at the Zion Lutheran Church of Imperial, with Pastor David Kahle officiating. Interment will follow at the Crete Cemetery, Champion, Nebraska.
Visitation will be held Sunday afternoon, March 13, 2011, 2:00 P.M. – 6:00P.M. at the funeral home In Imperial.
A memorial has been established to the Champion Community Center and Zion Lutheran Church of Imperial.
