Mable Spears

Mable (Blecha) Spears was born July 21, 1924, at Beatrice, Nebraska, to Joseph and Mary (Dezort) Blecha. Mable attended school as a young lady, and later met a young man working on a harvest crew named Lester Earl Spears.

Mable and Lester were married on January 14, 1942, in Benkelman, Nebraska, and made their first home on a farm north of town. The couple’s first son, Phillip, was born in 1943.They moved to the Spear’s Ranch, south of Stratton, Nebraska, in 1946, and their second son; Larry, was born. In 1955, the family moved to Rio Linda, California, where Mable was employed at a variety store for many years. In 1979, the couple retired and returned to Benkelman, making Benkelman their home till present.

Mable was a member of the United Methodist Church of Benkelman, a 50 year member of the Holly Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star, and the Benkelman’s Women’s Club. She had many hobbies including sewing, baking, camping, fishing, crocheting, and enjoyed getting her hair styled. She also enjoyed friends and conversation at the Benkelman Senior Center.

Mable passed away Sunday evening, May 13th, 2018, at the Dundy County Hospital, Benkelman. She was 93 years of age.

Mable was preceded in death by her parents, husband; Lester, in 2002, son; Larry, in 2016, brothers; Joe, Dutch and George Blecha, sisters; Clara Medlock, Rosie Himberg, Annie Crow, Mary Carlock, and her twin sister, Mae.

Survivors Include:
Son: Phillip Spears and wife, Norma, of Roundup, MT

Grandchildren: Kendell Spears, Heath (Kirsten) Spears, Shawn (Jami) Spears, Jodie Spears, Joe (Kelly) Spears, Luke Spears, and Cassandra Delong (Victor)

Brother: Harry Blecha of Wray, Colorado

Many loving great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, May 18th, 2018, 10:30 A.M. (Mountain Time) at the United Methodist Church of Benkelman, with Pastor Rod Heilburn officiating. Interment will follow at the Benkelman Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday afternoon, May 17th, 2018, 2:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. (Mountain Time) at the United Methodist Church of Benkelman.

A memorial has been established to the Benkelman Women’s Club and the Benkelman Senior Center.
