March 14, 1939 — August 28, 2017

Onita Porter

Onita Rebecca (Newman) Porter was born March 14, 1939, in Lincoln, Nebraska to John Henry and Bessie Jean (Chitty) Newman. She left her earthly home on August 28, 2017, at her home in Wauneta, Nebraska; with her family at her side to join her husband Leo and her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

On November 26, 1955, she married the love of her life, Leo Porter, and to this union they had five daughters and one son. During their early years of marriage, they traveled all over the United States and Asia as a military family. During this time Onita was busy leading girl scouts and boy scouts, being a 4-H leader and running Miss Nita Daycare in her home for many years. Her home was always open to anyone who needed anything day or night. Onita’s kitchen was always open and welcoming; she had many “children” that called her Miss Nita or grandma. She consistently had extras for anyone who showed up for dinner.

Onita enjoyed embroidering, TriChem painting, gardening, camping, fishing and most of all spending time with her kids and grandchildren.

After Leo retired from the military, they farmed for a while north of Palisade until Leo followed the Lord’s calling him into full time ministry. They served in many churches in Colorado, Idaho, Utah and Nebraska. Onita enjoyed spreading the love of God with others.

Onita was preceded in death by her husband Leo; infant son Anthony; parents John Henry Newman and Bessie Papik; sisters Peggy Sharp, Dorothy Schwaninger, Edena Loraine Wilson, and Jerrie Newman; brother Robert Wilson; sister-in-law Leota Brown; brothers-in-law Dick Warvi, Robert Schwaninger, Walter Barzydlo and Kenneth Foster; grandson; Andrew Roe and granddaughter; Amanda Douglas.
