Ruby Phyllis Rains was born February 21, 1923, at Stratton, Nebraska, to Ulysses S. and Lulu (Conner) Burks. . She grew up and attended school in Stratton graduating from Stratton High School. Ruby continued her education at Kearney State College where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, the beginning of a long teaching career.

Ruby married Roy R. Rains on August 6, 1946, in Stratton, NE, and to this union four children were born: Gerald, Gene, Linda, and Richard. The coupled settled on the family farm east of Stratton and later made their home in town.

Ruby was a lifelong teacher. Her career started in a country school and then in Stratton Nebraska Public Schools, spanning thirty years. She was a member of the Stratton United Methodist Church, the Order of the Eastern Star, and the American Legion Auxiliary. Ruby enjoyed cooking for her family, sewing and gardening, especially raising flowers. Another favorite hobby she enjoyed was bird watching.


Ruby passed away Sunday morning February 24th, 2019, at the Dundy County Hospital in Benkelman. She was 96 years of age.

10 Grandchildren: Chad Rains, Renee Campbell, Jeremy French, Jessica French,
Jody (Adam) Parsons, Clint (Dana) Brennan,
Laci (Tommy) Glatfelter, Brian (Melissa) Rains, Kevin (Jen) Rains,
Paul (Megaen) Rains

Graveside Services will be held Thursday morning, February 28, 2019, 11:00 A.M. (Central Time) at the Rose Hill Cemetery of Stratton, Nebraska, with Pastor Lisa Parde officiating.


In Lieu of flowers a memorial has been suggested to the Grandview Retirement Center of Stratton, NE.
