Shirley Schweitzer
Shirley Schweitzer, age 80, of Sterling, CO, joined the Lord September 8, 2022.
Born July 6, 1942 in Benkelman, NE to Elbert and Adeline (Antone) Berry, she was raised in Big Springs, NE. She married Loren Schweitzer of Julesburg in 1960 and had a daughter and son. The family moved to Sterling in 1964 residing in the same house she loved for 58 years. A single mother since 1968, she worked hard holding 2-3 jobs and odd jobs nights and weekends while still staying heavily involved with both her children’s education and activities. She said many times raising them to become compassionate and productive adults was her proudest achievement.
She joined the Sterling Post Office in 1979 and was a mail carrier until retirement in 2004.
Shirley was a creative soul and found many outlets to fulfill it. She did wall papering, painting, floral arrangements, stain glass, wooden Christmas decorations and event cakes for many people in the area. She volunteered to make hand crafted bulletin board scenes for the RE-1 Valley School District and taught crafts to patients in nursing homes. She enjoyed the outdoors, traveling the USA, feeding birds, Czechoslovakian family history, and jigsaw puzzles. She loved country music.
She is survived by her children Anita Weida (Paul) of Lee’s Summit, MO and Ivan Schweitzer (Tami) of Brighton, CO, brothers Kenneth (Tiny) Berry (Annie) of Lamar, Kansas, and Don Berry (Ann) of Cozad, NE, first cousins Linda Kerchal, Leane Kerchal of Ogallala, NE, Eldon Kerchal (Rita) of Lexington, NE, Sharon Maris (Leland) of Wauneta, NE, Steve Spelts (Sandy) of Fort Collins, CO, Janice Jeager of Imperial, NE, Kay Simmerman (Norris) of Wisconsin, Billy Jirik of Oklahoma and special friend and adventure companion Larry Foxhoven.
Shirley wished to thank the friends, neighbors, and caregivers both recent and throughout life in Sterling for their kindness to her.
Graveside Inurnment services will be held Monday morning, September 19, 2022, 10:30 A.M. at the Riverside Cemetery, Wauneta, NE. with Rev. Gary Hunt officiating.
