Sophia Zuege
Sophia Pauline (Keller) Zuege was born on August 20, 1918, to Reinholdt Keller and Annie (Lempke) Keller in Cheyenne County, Kansas. There, on the family farm, Sophie grew up with her 3 younger siblings: Martin, Edna and Irene. Surrounded by family in northern Cheyenne County, including aunts, uncles and cousins, Sophie grew up working on the farm, attending school and church, and tending to her chores and animals.
Sophie’s home and school south of Haigler is also where she met her husband, Albert. The two married during his military service and after he returned home from WWII, they began their lives together on the same farms where they grew up. Their family would grow with the births of two sons, Albert Jr. and Alfred Lee. The couple would remain on the Kansas farm until the early 80’s when they would move into town in Haigler. It is there where Sophie lived out the rest of her life at her Haigler home up until her passing at the age of 104.
Sophie was a mother, grandmother, sister, and great friend to most all who knew her. Her life was one of service and great faith, and she set an example for all who knew her through her humility, kindness, work ethic, and love of God.
Sophie left this life surrounded by family at the Dundy County Hospital on February 6, 2023. She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert Zuege, and her two sons, Albert Zuege, Jr., (Ginny) and Alfred Lee Zuege (Jeannie). Also preceding Sophie were her 3 siblings, Martin Keller, Edna Ellis, and Irene Blacker, as well as two great grandchildren, Emily Elle Garcia and Zachary David Zuege.
