Merlan Eugene “Toby” Hiatt was born January 2, 1947 in Benkelman, Nebraska to Richard and Velma (Brunt) Hiatt. He passed away at the Hester Memorial Home on July 15, 2017. He attended school at Benkelman and graduated with the Class of 1965. He enjoyed participating in all sports. While in high school, he worked for local farmers and Independent Elevators. On May 18, 1966, he was drafted into the United States Army, spending the time in Fort Bliss, Texas and Germany. He received his honorable discharge on May 17, 1972.
After his return, he was employed by Capital Bridge Company of Lincoln. He lived all over Nebraska and Kansas until he semi-retired in 1990. He returned to Benkelman and with his brother, Charlie worked around the area doing home repairs until he retired. He was very active in the American Legion where he served as Commander for several years. He made many friends through his lifetime; never meeting a stranger. He enjoyed all sports, especially football. A great joy was following his nieces and nephews and great-nephews in their activities.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Berneta Smith, a niece, Barbara Smith and a brother-in-law, Wayne Clark.
He leaves in his passing his sister, Marilyn Clark, brother, Charlie Hiatt, and brother-in-law, Robert Smith. Also, nieces, Brenda (David) Warren and Sherri (Alan) Pospisil and nephews Mike Clark and Doug (Judy) Clark and 8 great-nephews.
A Celebration of Life Service is being planned for a later date; service information will be posted at that time.
A memorial has been established in Toby’s memory.
