Wilma Bartels
Wilma Irene Bartels, the daughter of William & Carolina (Feikert) Keller, was born at the family home in rural Cheyenne County, Kansas, on June 10, 1929. She departed this life in the early morning hours on Friday, March 4, 2011, in Lincoln, Nebraska. She was 81 years of age.
Wilma was welcomed into the Lord’s family through baptism on August 4, 1929, by Reverend A.L. Hoemann and was confirmed on June 20, 1943, by Reverend Victor Lemke, both at Immanuel Lutheran Church in rural Cheyenne County.
She attended Cheyenne County Public Schools, graduated from St. Francis High School in 1947, and later received a teaching certificate from Fort Hayes State College.
Wilma was united in marriage to Reuben Carl Bartels on October 26, 1952, at Trinity Lutheran Church in St. Francis, Kansas. The couple resided in Enders, Nebraska, and were members of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Wauneta, Nebraska. They had five children: Ruby Carlene, Rae Jean, Darwin Keith, Cherine Gay, and Gayle Ann.
Prior to her marriage, Wilma worked a variety of jobs that included working on the family farm, teaching school, and helping neighbors with household chores. After her marriage to Reuben, she was a wife, mother, and homemaker. Following Reuben’s unexpected death in 1964, she worked in the Chase County Treasurer’s Office, the Chase County Clerk’s Office, and was later elected Chase County Clerk. She served as County Clerk for 12 years and retired in 1990. In addition to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Wilma enjoyed her flowers, gardening, cooking, reading, and brain-teaser puzzles. For many years, she decorated wedding cakes for friends and relatives. Wilma had an unwavering faith in God and is now at home with her Lord, Jesus Christ.
Wilma was preceded in death by her husband Reuben, infant daughter Rae Jean, parents William & Caroline Keller, sisters Betty Stroup and Hilda Hammond, and brothers Raymond, Alfred, Willard, and Wilmut Keller.
She is survived by her children: Ruby Nekola and husband George of Lincoln, NE; Darwin Bartels and wife Brenda of Urbandale, IA; Cherine Parde and husband Kevin of The Colony, TX; and Gayle Sell of Lincoln, NE; grandchildren: Jeff Nekola and wife Leslie, Kelly Nekola, Jonalyn and Tyler Bartels, Cassie Sell, and Kaili, Justin, and Hunter Parde; great-grandchildren: Connor, Tayten, and Evyn Nekola and Anthony Parde; sisters: Lela Watts and husband Don of Sacramento, CA and Alice Filbert of North Highlands, CA; sisters-in-law: Elsie Becker, Margie Bartels, and Ida Bartels, all of Wauneta; brothers-in-law: Boyd Stroup of Benkelman, NE and Don Hammond of Sacramento, CA; special niece: Bonnie Majors and husband Don of Wauneta; and many much-loved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral Services for Wilma Bartels will be held Saturday, March 12, 2011, 10:00 A.M. (MT) at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of rural Wauneta, Nebraska, with Pastor Keith Wellman officiating. Interment will follow at St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery.
Visitation will be held Friday afternoon, March 11, 2011, 2:00 P.M. – 6:00 P.M. (MT) at the funeral home in Imperial.
A memorial has been established in her memory.
