Wilma Eileen Wilkens was born on June 22, 1929 in Benkelman, Nebraska to Harry Louis and Eleanor L. (O’Neall) Cantin. She attended school in Benkelman and graduated with the Benkelman High School Class of 1947.
Wilma married John Thomas Wilkens on May 28, 1949 in Benkelman, Nebraska. The couple made a home in Benkelman where they raised their two daughters. Wilma worked at the Dundy County Courthouse from 1949 to her retirement in 1992. She became the county’s first county assessor in 1961 when the clerk’s office and the assessor office were separated.
She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in Benkelman; she was a woman of strong faith and had a smile for everyone. Wilma enjoyed caring for her flowers and houseplants. After her retirement from the court house she passed many hours crafting beautiful embroidery, wall hangings, quilts and kitchen towels. Wilma moved to the Linden Estates in North Platte, Nebraska in 2017.
Wilma passed away on August 19th, 2018 at Linden Estates in North Platte, Nebraska. She was 89 years of age.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John and her parents.

Daughter, Janet Latta and husband, Todd of Grand Island, Nebraska
Daughter, Lana Webster and husband, John of North Platte, Nebraska
Grandchildren: Merrill, Meredith, and Michael Latta and Katrina Webster
Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. (MT), Thursday morning, August 23rd, 2018 at Trinity Baptist Church in Benkelman with Pastors Mike Clements and Dave Logsdon officiating. Interment will follow in the Benkelman Cemetery, Benkelman, Nebraska.
Visitation will take place prior to services Thursday morning beginning at 8:00 A.M. (MT) at Trinity Baptist Church.
A memorial has been established in Wilma’s name.
